Until now, I have not hesitated to explain the blows that the foreign enemies of the truth maliciously inflicted upon us, a few of whom struck us and found many struck by us, for we were still united as equals. Henceforth, where dissension creeps in, our brotherhood shall dissolve, and with it, heavenly virtue; then we shall grow self-centered and our cries of lamentation shall multiply. But here our lamentation does not only resound for one nation, but for numerous nations and countries, which I will tell of in order, albeit without joy of mind. Unwillingly do I describe these many cases—how some of them lost their own true lives and became the cause for the loss of lives of many others (visible in some cases, and both visible and invisible in others). This lawless Mihr Narseh sent and called for Vasak, knowing beforehand of his impiety. Vasak, who had already separated himself from the Armenian brotherhood, came to Mihr Narseh, confirmed his fidelity and assured him of the disloyal Armenian revolt. He exaggerated and overstated what the Armenians had done and resolved to amicably influence the mind of the lawless one.

When he effected and accomplished all of this according to the king’s command, he daily wrote to the great hazarbed of the Persians [Mihr Narseh], who was hiding in the city of Paytarakan. Thereafter, he went boldly and approached many nations, filling some with terror and gladly distributing gifts among others. He called for Vasak and all the princes who were with him, bestowed many gifts upon them from the court, as well as to the soldiers in agreement with him. [Vasak] took before him the apostate priests, showing and explaining how with these he would lure the others and disband them from their covenant. When the hazarbed heard this, he was very thankful to the priests and placed hope before them: “If we succeed, the possessions of the other priests shall be bestowed to you and your great services will be represented to the king.”

Even in his own land, where he had two nephews who were among the virtuous brotherhood, he tattled on them to the royal court, received authority over their possessions and exiled them from the land so that they could not return. He persecuted and put to flight all the hermits of the land who cursed his irredeemable impiety. Then, on hearing all this, [Mihr Narseh] became more eager to learn about how many men would be leading the valiant warriors, so as to outnumber them three-to-one (let alone the others). He also inquired concerning each banner, as to how many regiments the army was divided into, who among them were officers, which commander would lead the battle on which side, the names of each adjutant, and how many trumpeters would sound in the army. Would they cast up entrenchments or encamp openly? Would they do battle head-to-head or concentrate them all together on one spot?
