As for those who upset and insult you with words of despair, adding wound upon wound and pain upon pain, as I have learned from your letter, they do not know of the ordinances of the Most High, and charge the just to be punished, though they do not realize that it is Satan who brings such things upon you as he did unto Job’s friends, for not only does he torment your bodies but also your minds, holding the great hope of consolation that lies before you to be vain. But Job did not allow his soul to be pierced following the loss of his children and his wealth, the wounds to his body and the exasperating words of his friends and wife (incited by Satan to argue with him), to whom he said: “you are worthless physicians; you are forgers of lies! If only you would be silent! For you, that would be wisdom.” (Job 13:5) And since Job’s friends spoke to him against God’s will, we see that upon the conclusion of his trials, God said to them: “If my servant Job had not prayed for you, I would have destroyed you for not speaking of me what is right.” (Job 42:8) For it is customary for Satan to find unbelievers, and those ignorant of Scripture and with evil treasures in their hearts (cf. Matthew 12:35), and to speak words of despair to them and to those like you whose bodies are now plagued, so that, being hopeless, you put yourselves in danger of troubles, grumble to God, and become deprived of your share of rewards.

As for those who scorn and reproach instead of pitying the afflicted, they insult Christ; just as when one takes pity on the needy, it is considered as to Christ. So, too, with their contempt and words of insult, and with all sorrowful passions that one lays upon those who are troubled and suffering, they do so to Christ. As He said to those on His left: “I was hungry, and you gave me no food . . .” (Matthew 25:42-43) And when they shall say “Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or naked and did not minister to you?”, (Matthew 25:44) he shall say to them “insomuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me” (Matthew 25:45). And when Christ appeared to Paul while he was a Jew, Paul heard a voice from heaven: “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” (Acts 9:4), which is not to be taken in the sense that Paul was able to persecute Him while He had been sitting to the right of God on High, but it is because He considers the persecution of His faithful as directed to Himself that He said this.

Now as He makes His martyrs as like Himself through imprisonment, torture and bloodshed, in the same way does Christ take revenge on unbelievers when He comes with the glory of his Father to judge the world. In these divine words let us stand firm, as in the saying "Whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward". In the beginning, in his youth, Abraham became pleasing to God, as it is written, “Abraham believed in God and it was credited to him for righteousness”; (Romans 4:3; Galatians 3:6; James 2:23) but after God tested him, Abraham willingly offered his son as a burnt offering to God, and only then he received God’s complete blessing, became father to many nations and a foundation and synagogue unto the kingdom of heaven. Paul’s towels, with which he wiped the sweat off his face, were used to heal the sick and diseased (Acts 19:12), but his own illness was not cured until his passing, for that was God's will, as he himself confesses: “Three times,” he says, “I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me, but He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness'.” (2 Corinthians 12:7-9) And so it is for all the righteous ones, old and new, who, overcoming their temptations, were found pleasing to God.

As to whether it was by God’s will to give his saints and beloveds over to lives of physical affliction instead of pleasure and comfort, let us address this briefly, albeit without being privy to God’s wisdom. Our first father Adam lost divine glory, immortal life and the beauty of paradise through the pleasure of the sweet fruit, and received in its place a thorny world and a grievous life of infirmity and affliction that concluded with death. Thus, the Creator and Lord of all became and was named the second Adam, becoming incarnate by His own nature for man’s salvation and proceeding on the journey of life without convenience but with supreme virtue as an example to men who would wish to walk the same path. And now because few enter heaven through the narrow road and small gate (that is to say, with pure virginity and willing virtue), through which the ascetics first went and taught us of the all-wise knowledge of God, who wills for everyone to live and arrive at true knowledge and to become worthy of the ineffable good things that have been promised us. This could be seen in the examples of the two paralytics, one of whom was by the pool in Bethesda (John 5:2) to whom Christ said after he healed him: “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you”, (John 5:14) demonstrating that the man’s sins were the cause of his 38 years of paralysis. And the second, whom they lowered from the roof before him, to whom he said: “Your sins are forgiven you”, (Luke 5:19-20) with which he made clear that the man had borne his illness because of his sins, and only when God pardoned the sins he was bearing in his soul did his body, which had grown ill due to his sins, become healthy.

As for those who accept such pains as remedies from God and endure their troubles in gratitude to Him, and willingly bear their passions that arise unwillingly, God considers that they willingly bore their struggles in favor of His command and rewards them accordingly. As for those who grumble to God and call their judgment unjust, as to ‘how could he grant pardon to the evil ones in health, but allow us, who are different than them, to suffer and bear the burden of poverty?’, these ones despite bearing their troubles are found void in recompense like the deserter among the Forty Martyrs. This is out of the ignorance and faithlessness of those who do not understand the depths of God’s judgments, as to why He wills to cure some with the aforementioned remedy while neglecting others.

Do we not see the same thing among the patients of pediatricians? For they do not attempt to treat those who are understood to have untreatable illnesses with the same means as those whom they see as treatable and whom they make haste to treat without sparing any means. So, too, for God, the true doctor of soul and body, who, when he looks into the heart of man and sees there is one part good, he heaps poverty, illness, or both unto him, so that the seed of that small part of goodness bear fruit. As for those whom he recognizes as untreatable, he does not undertake to cure them with illnesses or poverty, but allows them to follow their will unto death, with what little goodness they receive in exchange, for they proceed without answer.

But not all illnesses are for the aforementioned reason, for many arise due to the opposition of elements, which are also found in the body. We also bear such illnesses to the extent that we are naturally susceptible to disease, whether we are righteous or sinful. Now this too we say, that the poverty and troubles that God casts onto the afflicted is not only for the atonement of their sins, but also so that the healthy and wealthy, having compassion for them and giving alms to them, may have their own sins forgiven by God and that they may receive His mercy, according to the true blessedness of Christ, which says: “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Matthew 5:7), so that everyone shall become worthy of attaining the good things promised—the poor by their poverty, the sufferers by the torments of their bodily afflictions, and the troubled by their troubles—when they thankfully bear their troubles, their sufferings and their poverty, and live their lives with pure conduct according to the commandment of God. So, too, for the rich and the delicate ones, who by their mercy shall receive atonement for their sins and heavenly goodness: by feeding the poor, dressing those without clothing, gathering the foreigners and attending to those in confinement and comforting them. But not with precise measures! lest their lamps extinguish because they run out of oil like the foolish virgins (Matthew 25), but distributing with generosity of heart and giving to those in need according to the advice of the prophet.
