As we often see in the southern regions, multitudes of men, living without women, gather in brotherhood—men of one nation and one tongue, assembled together as though in their own homeland. They dwell two by two, or three by three, or in still larger groups, each in his own cell, set apart from the others. Their walls are built straight and plain, serving for protection against the cold; their roofs, of the same kind, shield them from the sun; their floors are bare, furnished only with beds of grass. And since it is our nature to cover our nakedness, they clothe themselves in plain and humble garments—light tunics for the summer and thick cloaks for the winter. They also wear hoods.

Above all, it is their unceasing duty to go about in worship, offering spiritual songs to the Father with joyful hearts. When they stand facing one another, they cast their eyes downward, fixing their gaze upon the tips of their toes, as though all were looking upon a single point. They place their right hand upon the chin and the left upon the breast, as I suppose they have learned from their natural forefathers. The two most honorable things in the body are the vital and the rational, each serving the other: the vital is opposed to the passionate, while the rational governs speech. Thus, by placing the left hand upon the right side of the chin, they keep watch over the rational faculty that rules the tongue, lest any discord muddle right glorification. And by this twofold posture, all the passions recede, with the eyes in true vision, the ears in vigilant audition, the mind in holy wisdom, and so forth, each according to its part.

For I am greatly terrified by our slothfulness, seeing that most men are wallowing in their earthly possessions. Now I see in our land that no one has been rescued from such misfortunes.
