Translated by Beyon Miloyan

This set contains both volumes of the History of the Vartanants Saints by Yeghishe. This work is one of the gems of the Golden Age of Armenian literature and is an important part of Sophene’s Dual Language Series. In this series, we aim to make the most important works of ancient Armenian literature accessible to the broadest possible audience by placing the original Armenian text on the left-hand side and the corresponding English translation on the right-hand side.

The History of the Vartanants Saints (formerly known as the History of Vartan and the Armenian War) is a major source for the Battle of Avarayr, its causes and aftermath and an account of the saints who were martyred in the course of the war. But beyond this, and much more, Yeghishe’s History is a panegyric of the saints who were martyred in the course of the war. The History covers the thirty-six-year period from AD 428 to 464 in seven chapters. Volume I contains the first four chapters and covers the period from the fall of the Armenian Arsacid dynasty (428 AD) to the events that led to the Battle of Avarayr (451). Volume II covers the period from the Battle of Avarayr to its aftermath in 464.
